Long Beach police believe at least five people tried to help a suspected gunman avoid capture after he killed a 24-year-old woman with a stray bullet in December and now prosecutors have issued arrest warrants for them, according to authorities.

Thomas McCreary, 42, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder on Dec. 20 and is awaiting trial after police say he shot and killed Anna Perez, who was a bystander trying to get to her car after a night out with friends on Dec. 1.

According to police, he got into an argument with a group of people in a parking lot near Fourth Street and Pacific Avenue around 2 a.m. and ended up firing multiple shots, at least one of which hit Perez in the torso.

Police arrested McCreary on Dec. 7, but are now looking for a handful of alleged co-conspirators.

“After reviewing the evidence, a felony complaint was filed and arrest warrants issued for the following persons believed to have had knowledge of the murder, and believed to have assisted Thomas McCreary with the intent he might avoid arrest and prosecution,” according to a police statement.

They listed Samantha Kidd, 42, Anthony Garret, 21, Shanae Garcia, 33, James Strong, 49, and Jovan Harris, 39, all from Los Angeles, as the people suspected of helping McCreary.

Los Angeles gang detectives arrested Harris on Friday, and he is being held on a $1,085,000 bail. Police also allege he unlawfully possessed a firearm with a prior felony conviction.
