Police arrested three people believed to be involved in a shooting that wounded three people, including two teens, Thursday night outside a corner market, officials said.

All three victims are now in stable condition, spokeswoman Allison Gallagher said.

They were called to the scene on the 700 block of Chestnut Avenue just before 4:40 p.m. and about 10 minutes later, police found two suspects inside a dark SUV and detain them, Gallagher said. They also found a third suspect shortly after.

“While the motive is still under investigation, detectives believe the shooting is gang-related,” Gallagher said.

Police arrested 25-year-old Guadalupe Vargashernandez, 43-year-old April Ortega and 30-year-old George Mercado on suspicion of attempted murder, being ex-felons in possession of a firearm and participation in a criminal street gang. Ortega is also suspected of being an accessory and Mercado is also suspected of a violation of parole.

Vargashernandez and Ortega are being held in jail on a $1,040,000 bail and Mercado is being held on no bail.

Police asked that anyone with information on the incident to contact investigators at 562-570-7370. Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-8477 or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org
