A little over a month after a gunman opened fire on a group of men in the Washington Middle School neighborhood, police arrested a man in connection with Aug. 20 shooting.

Officers on Friday arrested Travis Cocktrell, 22, of Long Beach, on suspicion of attempted murder. He is being held on a $1 million bail.

Police also initially arrested Angela Zelaya, 27, of Long Beach, on suspicion of attempted murder, but she was later released from custody pending further investigation, police spokesman Ben Hearst said.

Investigators allege Cocktrell approached a group of men who were outside and started shooting near 15th Street and Daisy Avenue at 8 p.m. on Aug. 20. No one was struck by gunfire during the shooting, and the gunman fled the scene on foot. Detectives believe the motive was gang-related.

“Through their investigation, detectives found evidence linking 22-year-old Travis Cocktrell of Long Beach to the shooting,” Hearst said in an email, though authorities did not elaborate on the evidence.

Detectives are expected to present their case to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office for filling in the coming days, he said.
