Long Beach police have arrested a 35-year-old New York man suspected of driving a car while drunk and crashing it into a tree near Downtown Long Beach early Sunday morning.

The impact of the crash caused the car to split into two pieces and ejected the passenger, who died at the hospital on Monday.

Peter Koutros was arrested Monday on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing injury.

“Based on their investigation, detectives believed Koutros to be under the influence of alcohol and was booked following his release from the hospital,” police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said.

He has been released on a $100,000 bond, according to jail records.

Police said in their original news release that Koutros lost control of a 2019 Infiniti Q50S on the stretch of Shoreline Drive that leads to the northbound 710 Freeway at about 3:35 a.m. Sunday.

The passenger is only being identified as a male adult, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Police have asked anyone with information to call Det. Allen Duncan at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be sent to Los Angeles Regional Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-TIPS or visiting lacrimestoppers.org.
