An Inglewood man has been arrested in connection with the death of his 1-year-old daughter after her body was found in the Los Angeles River in Long Beach Monday evening, according to police.

The Inglewood Police Department was alerted to the missing child when officers responded to a call of an at-risk missing person in the 300 block of North Market Street around 10:44 p.m. Sunday. There, the child’s grandmother told police that her son, who lives with her, went to Long Beach to pick up his two children from their mother earlier that day and only returned home with one of his children.

The body of 1-year-old Leilani Burley was found the next day in the LA River in Long Beach, below the Ocean Boulevard bridge, with assistance from the Long Beach Police Department’s Dive Team, according to the IPD and Long Beach Police Department spokesman Brandon Fahey.

The child’s father, 22-year-old Jayveyon Burley, was arrested on suspicion of murder and child endangerment and booked into the Inglewood Police Department Jail, according to police. Burley is being held in lieu of $215,000 bail, according to county jail records.

Anyone with information about the homicide is urged to contact Inglewood Police Department Homicide Detectives at 310-412-5246 or the 24-hour anonymous tip line at 888-412-7463.
