What goes up must come down—that includes bullets.

Firing a gun into the air is not only illegal but likely to kill or seriously injure anyone struck by it because a falling bullet hits the head or upper body in most cases, the Long Beach Police Department warns.

“Unfortunately, this type of activity is very familiar to our Department and has affected members of our community in the past,” stated Patrol Deputy Chief Wally Hebeish. “We are excited about the upcoming year, and ask that you please consider others when celebrating. Your safety is our main priority.”

Discharging a firearm into the air is a felony in California and offenders can be sentenced up to three years in state prison. And that’s only if the bullet doesn’t hit anyone. If it does and it kills a victim, the shooter can be charged with murder, police said.

Police encourage residents to report gunfire and any other suspicious activity they may witness.

In addition, police remind residents that all fireworks are illegal in Long Beach and are punishable by $1,000 fine, six months of jail, or both.
