Long Beach police are investigating after a man showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound but couldn’t tell officers much about what happened.

Officers responded to the hospital at about 11 p.m. and the victim told them he was shot earlier in the evening, but he wasn’t clear exactly where or how, police spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

“Responding officers believe the victim appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance,” De Prez said.

He gave them multiple possible locations, and officers found evidence of a shooting on the sidewalk near Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and 23rd Street, she said.

Police said the man was wounded in the lower body, and the injury didn’t appear to be life-threatening.

Detectives are still investigating.
