Police say they shot at a person who had what turned out to be a pellet gun outside a motel in North Long Beach Thursday afternoon. Nobody was wounded by the gunfire, and the person was soon arrested, according to a Long Beach Police Department spokesperson.
The situation began shortly after 1:30 p.m. when officers responded to a report of a person with a gun in a motel on Atlantic Avenue near 55th Street, according to a news release from the department.
Upon arrival, officers saw the person with what appeared to be a gun outside the motel and ordered them to put down the weapon, LBPD Executive Communications Officer Allison Gallagher said.
When the person refused, an officer fired multiple shots but did not hit anyone, she said. The person “immediately surrendered and was taken into custody,” police said in the news release.

Officers recovered a pellet gun at the scene, according to the LBPD. The person’s name, gender and age weren’t immediately available.
Police shut down Atlantic Avenue between 55th and 56th streets as they began an extensive investigation — as is typical with officer-involved shootings.

Gallagher declined to describe exactly what prompted the officer to fire. She said the department is reviewing body-worn camera footage from the shooting and will release it as soon as possible.
No officers were hurt.
Today’s shooting happened just a few blocks north where police shot and killed a man outside a church last month.
