A SWAT team descended on the Poly neighborhood Saturday morning after getting reports of a man, suspected of pointing a gun at someone, being seen in the area, authorities said.

Neighbors said the SWAT team searched from house to house, looking in backyards and under homes for the suspect. No description of the man was immediately available from police.

The suspect was also wanted on an outstanding warrant, police spokeswoman Arantxa Chavarria said.

Authorities took the suspect into custody and started clearing the perimeter at around 2:30 p.m., Chavarria said.

The search stemmed from an incident on Friday when police were called to the 1900 block of Pasadena Avenue at about 1 p.m. A victim told police the suspect pointed a gun at them and, with the help of witnesses, they were able to identify him, Chavarria said.

The suspect left the area before police got there and they were unable to locate him, she said.

Saturday’s search began around 9:10 in the morning when patrol officers spotted the suspect in the area of 19th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. When officers contacted him, he fled and was last seen in the area of 20th Street and Long Beach Boulevard. “He was armed yesterday, so we would deduce that he still is,” Chavarria said.

Police set up containment between Hill Street and 20th Street and Long Beach Boulevard and Pasadena Avenue for hours until about 2:30 p.m.

“We ask that residents stay out of the area as the investigation is ongoing and the scene is still active,” Chavarria said.

Neighbors stood outside talking about what was going on and watching the police activity. Some residents were stuck out of their houses because they weren’t home when the incident started. Some were stuck inside the perimeter because they couldn’t re-enter if they left.

Robert Reyes, a resident in the area, said his parents called him and told him a SWAT team is searching in their yard and that he wouldn’t be able to get inside.
