A man was shot in the Los Angeles River channel near Artesia Boulevard Tuesday afternoon, Long Beach police said.
Police were called to the scene at about 2:30 p.m. where they found a man with gunshot wounds to his upper and lower body, according to Officer Ivan Garcia.
Paramedics took him to a local hospital, and his wounds are believed to be non-life threatening, Garcia said.
Police do not have a suspect description available and they do not yet know why the man was shot.
While police were investigating the shooting, they discovered a suspicious package within the crime scene and called the LA County bomb squad, which later “rendered the package safe.”
The squad determined it to be a “hoax device,” police said.
The investigation impacted vehicle traffic between Atlantic Avenue and the 710 freeway, Garcia said.
