Someone opened fire on a parked car in North Long Beach early Tuesday morning, killing a man inside, according to police, who are trying to find out who pulled the trigger and why.

Long Beach police said the shooting happened around 2:10 a.m. near White Avenue and Butler Street, which is in a residential portion of the Coolidge Triangle neighborhood.

Two men were in the parked car when another driver pulled up from the side and at least one person inside his or her vehicle opened fire, the LBPD said in a news release.

Officers rushed to the scene after police received 911 calls about gunshots and someone screaming, according to the news release.

After they arrived, officers learned the gunfire wounded one of the men who’d been in the car but missed the other one, police said.

The unhurt victim took the wounded man to the hospital where he died, police said. The department identified him as 23-year-old Tyree Latrell Coleman of Long Beach.

“The exact motive for the shooting is still under investigation,” police said. “Detectives are actively working to gather additional information to further the investigation.”

Authorities said they don’t have a description of any suspects, but “a light-colored vehicle was seen leaving the area westbound on Harcourt Avenue from White Avenue.”

Police urged anyone with information to contact detective Michael Hubbard or Leticia Gamboa at 562-570-7244.
