A man whom authorities say worked at a Valero gas station was fatally shot in Long Beach, and detectives today are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.
Officers were notified of the shooting just after 10 p.m. Tuesday and responded to 6944 Atlantic Ave., where, upon their arrival, they found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, authorities said.
The victim was taken to a hospital by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
Detectives investigating the crime later learned that the victim confronted the suspect in the gas station parking lot, which escalated into the suspect shooting him, according to police.
Police did not say why the man confronted the suspect.
The suspect then fled the scene in a vehicle before officers arrived, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
A witness told ABC 7 that he heard at least five gunshots at the gas station.
Police were seen searching a Nissan sedan for possible evidence outside the gas station.
No suspect description was provided by authorities, who said that the motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
Authorities have not publicly identified the slain man as they work to notify his family.
