Long Beach police were called to the scene of a shooting in front of Big John’s Liquor on the corner of Daisy Avenue and 10th Street around 9:10 p.m. Saturday.

The victim, a man who sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body, was taken to a local hospital, according to police. Lieutenant Robert Bernsen, one of the officers on the scene, said the man was conscious, breathing and talking when he was placed on a stretcher and wheeled into the ambulance.

Bernsen said police will be conducting “knock and talks” in the neighborhood, hoping to find witnesses who can lead to the identification of a suspect.

Police suspect that the shooting took place just a few feet away from the well-lit liquor store parking lot and that the victim ran toward the store after being shot.

No further details were immediately available.
