Police said a gunman in a car opened fire on two men walking through Long Beach’s Willmore neighborhood early Friday morning, wounding one of them.

The victims were walking near Magnolia Avenue and Loma Vista Drive around 3:45 a.m. when a vehicle pulled up and someone started shooting, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police rushed to the area after getting a call about the gunfire but couldn’t find the crime scene or any victims at first, LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

They soon learned one of the victims had gone to the hospital on his own to get treatment for a gunshot wound to the upper body, De Prez said. The wound didn’t appear to be life-threatening, she said.

Officers then found evidence of the shooting near Magnolia and Loma Vista, De Prez said.

Police don’t yet know why the shooter opened fire, and a detailed description of him was not available.
