The Signal Hill Police Department announced Wednesday a crackdown on drunk and buzzed driving for the holiday season, including a DUI checkpoint for Friday night.

More officers will be on patrol looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence from Dec. 13 to Jan. 1, according to a department release.

“Unfortunately, this time of year is when we see more people driving impaired,” Sgt. Steve Noble said. “There is no excuse for driving after drinking or using drugs that impair. There are many ways to get home safely without driving.”

Police will hold the checkpoint from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. somewhere in Signal Hill on Friday night.

Impaired driving can happen with prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana, especially when combined with alcohol and other drugs, police said.

Party hosts should ensure their guests are getting home safely by offering non-alcoholic drinks to designated drivers and checking on how others are getting home.
