A former professional skateboarder and longtime punk singer was charged Tuesday for felony assault of his girlfriend whom he lived with in Long Beach.

duanepetersDuane Peters, 52, was arrested Saturday for the incident, which occurred shortly before midnight in the 4000 block of East 3rd St., said police Sgt. Megan Zabel. Prosecutors say Peters had become angry with his girlfriend and assaulted her at their residence, prompting neighbors to intercede until police arrived and arrested him. The victim sustained some injuries to her body.

Originally from Orange County, Peters has been a fixture in skate and punk circles for decades. He is credited with inventing new skateboarding tricks throughout the ’70s and ’80s and has been a singer in numerous bands, most notably, U.S. Bombs, which formed in 1992.

He had a high-profile struggle with alcohol and herion addiction, but entered a rehabilitation facility in 2007 and has allegedly been clean since.

Peters is expected to appear in court Thursday, where prosecutors are requesting that his bail be set at $50,000. If convicted of the one felony count of willful infliction of corporal injury as he is charged, he faces a maximum of four years in state prison.
