Police chased down a man after he tried to hit a security guard with a skateboard at an East Long Beach grocery store Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

Police said the incident started around 12:25 with a man and a woman trying to shoplift at 2080 Bellflower Blvd., which is a Lazy Acres Market.

When an employee stopped the pair, “the male suspect attempted to hit the employee with his skateboard,” LBPD spokeswoman Jennifer De Prez said.

Police officers were able to detain the woman at the scene, but the man with the skateboard took off on foot, De Prez said.

This sparked a search for him. Police said they called in K-9 officers and found him at a home a short distance away.

“Officers believe the residence where the suspect was located was that of a possible friend or acquaintance of the suspect,” De Prez said.
