February 10, 2016 at 6:32PM | A suspect linked to an officer-involved shooting Wednesday afternoon was arrested by officers shortly after, according to the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

The adult male suspect was taken into custody near the location of the shooting incident, around the 2100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at about 5:00PM, LBPD spokesman Brad Johnson said.

After the shooting, the suspect fled from the officers who saw him holding a handgun, added Johnson.

No one was injured during the incident.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the shooting but officials did say it was based off an “officer-initiated activity” on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

“When they went to go contact the subject he was in a vehicle but we cannot confirm if that was a traffic stop or if they were parked and they went to go make contact,” Johnson said.

The area has seen some recent spikes in violent crime, according to officials, prompting more officers directed to go out there to combat violent crime. These officers were a resource directed for that purpose, Johnson said.

Officers continued looking for evidence, including the handgun, Wednesday evening.
