Three people were arrested Saturday night during a DUI checkpoint conducted by the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) in North Long Beach, police announced Monday.

The checkpoint took place from 7:00PM Saturday to 3:00AM Sunday in the area of northbound Cherry Avenue at 59th Street.

During the eight-hour operation, 1,219 vehicles passed through the checkpoint with 319 drivers being screened for driving under the influence.

The checkpoint resulted in three drivers arrested for DUI, three standardized field sobriety tests conducted, seven drivers cited for unlicensed driving, one driver cited for driving with a suspended license, six drivers cited for traffic violations and one vehicle impounded.

The LBPD also announced Monday that the LBPD will conduct a DUI saturation patrol on Friday, as part of the department’s “ongoing commitment to lowering deaths and injuries upon our streets and highways.”

During the saturation patrol, officers will be deployed throughout Long Beach in an effort to stop and arrest alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions and/or arrests, police said.

The checkpoint and saturation patrol are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
