Deputies inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lakewood station shot and wounded a suspect who attacked a jailer Friday afternoon, according to authorities.

The shooting happened at about 12:50 p.m. at the station at 5130 Clark Ave., according to Deputy Marvin Crowder of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.

Both the inmate and jailer were taken to the hospital, officials said.

Lt. John Corina of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau told reporters at the scene that a custody assistant was fingerprinting the suspect, who had been arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, when he punched her in the face. As she fell to the ground, he took her Taser that had been attached to her hip.

The employee, who was reported to have suffered a broken nose and a concussion, activated an alarm alerting others in the station. The suspect then pulled her by the hair into a cell and pointed the Taser at the responding deputies, according to a Sheriff’s Department statement released Saturday morning.

The watch commander then told deputies to bring their firearms into the jail. After trying to deescalate the situation, deputies used pepper spray on the suspect, but it did not stop him from continuing his assault, authorities said in the statement.

Once deputies arrived with their firearms, the suspect closed and locked the cell door, but deputies were able to open it with another set of keys. When the suspect refused commands to surrender, he pointed the Taser at deputies.

“Deputies fearing the suspect was going to deploy the Taser at them and would not stop his assault on the Custody Assistant, fired at least one round at the suspect striking him in the upper torso area,” authorities said in the statement.

The custody assistant was able to crawl out of the cell and deputies tried to shut the door behind her, but the suspect tried to keep it open. A deputy then incapacitated the suspect by deploying his Taser through a cuffing port door.

He was hospitalized in critical but stable condition, according authorities, and the jailer is listed in stable condition.
