A documented gang member, 25-year-old Samuel Castaneda was arrested Friday after a pursuit conducted by the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

Castaneda, a resident of Long Beach, was booked for multiple felony charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, felony evading, ex-felon with a gun, possession of a controlled substance while armed, possession of controlled substance for sale, possession of a stolen gun, violation of a gang injunction and five outstanding Long Beach arrest warrants.

According to LBPD spokesperson Marlene Arrona, officers observed what they believed to be a narcotics exchange between a pedestrian and a man in a vehicle around 6:00PM on Friday, January 22, in the area of 14th Street and Rose Avenue.

When the pedestrian saw the officers approach, both men began to flee. When the officers attempted to detain the driver of the car, he tried to flee and attempted to run over one of the officers, who escaped serious harm by jumping on the hood of the car and safely rolling off.

Arrona said the car sped off and a short pursuit ended on the 1200 block of East 16th Street, when the car became disabled due to an unknown mechanical issue. The man then tried to flee on foot, but was taken into custody safely in a nearby yard when an officer used his electronic control device.

The officers discovered a stolen handgun the suspect had attempted to rid himself of during the foot pursuit, as well as narcotics.

Castaneda is being held in the Long Beach jail on $506,794 bail, Arrona said.
