A routine traffic stop turned into the Long Beach Police Department’s second fatal officer-involved shooting this month after the suspect, who was a wanted felon listed as armed and dangerous, fled into a neighborhood.
According to police, the man was stopped at around 2:30AM early Tuesday morning in the area of 3rd St. and Walnut Ave. and immedialy engaged officers in a foot pursuit. Through the remaining car passengers, officers determined the suspect’s identity and confirmed he was wanted by the Los Angeles Police Department on a felony armed and dangerous warrant for carjacking.
“A containment was set, [the] suspect [was] located on a roof and at some point, an officer involved shooting occurred in the area of 4th St & Nebraska,” said Marlene Arrona of the LBPD. KABC reported that the suspect was located about 90 minutes after the foot pursuit originally began.
The suspect died at the scene, Arrona said. It is unclear whether he was armed at the time of the officer-involved shooting or what he did that prompted officers to fire. 4th St. between Orange Ave. and Walnut Ave. were closed through Tuesday morning as well as Nebraska Ave. between 4th St. and 7th St. due to the active investigation.
This is the second officer-involved shooting this week and the second fatal one this month. On November 1, a documented gang member who was firing at a car at a gas station on Anaheim St. and Magnolia Ave. was shot and killed and on Saturday, a woman brandishing what turned out to be a replica Beretta handgun was injured by LBPD.
LBPD has been involved in 20 officer-involved shootings to date this year, including accidental discharges and shots fired on animals. Six of those incidents have resulted in suspect fatalities, nearly triple the five-year average.
