The North Long Beach DUI checkpoint operated by the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) on Saturday yielded two drunk driving arrests and six citations for unlicensed driving, the LBPD announced Tuesday afternoon.

The eight hour checkpoint was held between 7:00AM and 3:00PM at Atlantic Ave. and South St.

A total of 286 drivers were screened out of the 575 vehicles that passed through the checkpoint, according to the release. An additional total of five field sobriety tests were conducted, two individuals were suspended for driving without a license, and one vehicle was impounded for a suspended license. One arrest was also made for a separate charge.

The release stated that the average American has a “30 percent chance of being killed or injured by a driver under the influence,” and that “Sobriety checkpoints have been proven to reduce these types of driving-related collisions by removing such drivers from our streets.”
