A hit-and-run driver killed a woman who was walking in a crosswalk in the area of Atlantic Avenue and Market Street just after 8 p.m. Tuesday night, officials said.

Police believe a driver in a red sedan was headed southbound on Atlantic Avenue at a high speed when her or she hit the woman in a marked crosswalk. The driver did not stop and immediately fled, police said. The car had major front-end damage. A police spokeswoman said investigators found a possible suspect vehicle unoccupied nearby.

Paramedics at the scene tried to save the woman, but she succumbed to her injuries at the scene, according to police. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office is working to identify her and notify her next of kin.
