Long Beach police are looking for the driver in a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman and put a man in critical condition in Wrigley Tuesday night.

Officers found the victims, who were pedestrians, lying in the intersection of Pacific Avenue and Burnett Street at about 11:55 p.m. The female victim was not responsive and the male victim was critically injured, police said in a release.

Paramedics transported both victims to a local hospital, where the woman succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The man, a 35-year-old resident of Wilmington, is still in critical condition, according to police.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the collision occurred when two pedestrians crossed Pacific Avenue in a marked crosswalk on the north side of the intersection,” the news release said.

The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the woman as 30-year-old Elyssa Negrete of Wilmington.

Police don’t yet know if the victims knew each other, but they were walking in the same direction in “close proximity to each other,” police spokeswoman Shaunna Dandoy said.

Brian Fritz, an Uber driver, caught the entire crash on his dash camera as he was driving the opposite direction on Pacific Avenue. He had just picked up his passenger when he saw a car hit the victims.

“The people crossing the street caught my eye,” Fritz said. “I saw headlights behind the people and I kept thinking: ‘That car is gonna stop right?’”

The dash camera video shows the victims were nearly to the end of the crosswalk when the driver crashed into them and proceeded to keep driving southbound on Pacific Avenue. Fritz said the car didn’t appear to be doing anything out of the ordinary prior to the crash.

The video is too blurry to make out a license plate number, but Fritz said he posted the video on YouTube in hopes that someone might come forward to police about the incident. He gave officers a copy of the footage at the scene, he said.

The vehicle that struck them was a white, possibly four-door car, but detectives are still working to determine what model the vehicle was. The driver was going southbound on Pacific Avenue at Burnett Street, fled the scene and was last seen heading south on Pacific Avenue, police said.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Detective David Whelan at 562-570-7355.
