A female bystander was hospitalized early Monday morning after being struck by stray gunfire near the Pike in Downtown Long Beach, police said.

Police said the shooting happened around 2:12 a.m. near the 100 block of Pine Avenue. A gunman fired toward a vehicle but ended up hitting a woman who wasn’t involved, police said.

Officers heard the shots and quickly responded, finding the woman with a gunshot wound to her upper body, according to the LBPD.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported her to a local hospital to be treated for an injury that was not life-threatening, according to police.

No suspect information was available as the shooter fled before the officers arrived. The vehicle that was fired on was also gone by the time police arrived, according to the LBPD.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
