A young woman died this morning after being shot by an unknown gunman while dropping off her three year-old at a relative’s house.

Residents in the 500 block of Walnut Ave. reported hearing gunshots at around 6:20AM Thursday morning and arriving officers found 23-year-old Jazzmine Wash deceased in the courtyard of the gated apartment complex where her family members lived.

According to police, Wash was dropping off her child at the residence and exited the apartment to retrieve a diaper bag when multiple shots were heard.

“A motive for the shooting is unknown…and investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward,” Long Beach Police Department said in a press release.

This is the second instance of gun violence this week in the same area, following a gang-related triple shooting that left one man in critical condition.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police Homicide Detectives Hugo Cortes and Peter Lackovic at (562) 570-7244.  Anonymous tips may be submitted by calling 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), texting TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or visiting www.lacrimestoppers.org.
