A new report from MONEY magazine has ranked Cal State Long Beach as No. 5 in the nation for awarding degrees to students who transfer from community colleges and other campuses.

In its analysis, the magazine used newly available federal data on completion rates for transfer students to highlight colleges where the students are gradating in high numbers.

Long Beach State ranked in the top 10 for graduating 83 percent of its transfer students within four years.

The magazine cited the clearly defined pathways between the state’s UC and CSU systems and community colleges as factors that help California’s transfer students.

In a statement, President Jane Close Conoley attributed a large part of the success to the university’s partnership in the Long Beach College Promise, which provides a streamline for local students from Long Beach Unified and Long Bech City College.

“Once they are here, our faculty and staff deliver an outstanding educational experience, focusing on student success,” she said. “We also value our additional partnerships with our regional community colleges that continue to prepare the next generation of high achieving Californians.”

University of California, Los Angeles ranked No. 1, followed by University of California, Berkeley at No. 2 and Emory University in Atlanta at No. 3. The magazine ranked two other Cal State University campuses in the top 10 – Cal State Channel Islands and San Diego State.

In August, MONEY ranked Long Beach State 22nd overall in the nation for quality, affordability and alumni outcomes.
