This past month I had the opportunity to staff the CSULB Human Relations Summit, an annual program designed to explore personal identity, expose stereotypes and encourage increased dialogue on race, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. The summit is a collaboration among several university departments, all necessary to effectively address relevant topics and to thereafter facilitate intense and meaningful discussions.

These departments include Student Life and Development, Counseling and Psychological Services and Educational Equity Services. Dr. Jeff Klaus, CSULB’s Director of Student Life and Development, planned and executed this year’s summit and had this to say about its importance. “What’s crucial for us to understand, as educators in a diverse society, is the importance of personal development and the impact racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination have on students. The Human Relations Summit is a specific example of how we provide a quality education to our students outside the classroom, and how we engage them to challenge themselves through the process.”

Dr. Klaus provided the Long Beach Post with the following slideshow from the Human Relations Summit.
