12:01pm | A nonprofit organization that provides daycare and state preschool programs at several childcare centers for children from low-income or at-risk families that work or live in Long Beach has announced that it is offering the federally subsidized Child and Adult Care Food Program.
All children in who currently attend daycare or preschool at one of Young Horizons Child Development Centers’ seven Long Beach sites are eligible to receive free and reduced-price nutritious meals and snacks through the program, which is authorized under the National School Lunch Act and overseen by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The meals are provided with no physical segregation or other discrimination against any child because of race, color, national origin, age, sex or disability, said Richard Adams, the food program manager at Young Horizons.
He said that organizations participating in the program are required to alert the media of their participation to ensure access to the program.
Whether a child will receive free or reduced-price meals is determined based on the following income criteria:
The above scale does not apply to households that receive food stamps, Kin-GAP or FDPIR benefits or children who are recipients of CalWORKs. Those children are automatically eligible for free meals.
The “Child and Adult Care Food Program” is available to all eligible participants. To file a complaint of discrimination, write USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Room 326-W, Whitten Building, 1400 Independence Avenue, SA, Washington, D.C. 20250-9410 or call 202-720-5964 (voice and TDD).
