11:20am | During this afternoon’s Long Beach City Council meeting, 3rd District Councilmember Gary DeLong will introduce a motion that could lead to naming the designated dog beach zone after Rosie the Bulldog, a popular local icon who belonged to activist Justin Rudd and was the inspiration for a slew of pet parades and events.
Rosie passed away this January.
The motion from DeLong would send the idea to the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Housing and Neighborhoods Committee.
A Press-Telegram article on Monday pointed out that today’s Council agenda may be loaded with motions from councilmembers that are facing re-election next week, DeLong among them.
Rudd spearheaded the movement in 2003 to designate the off-leash dog zone between Roycroft and Argonne in Belmont Shore. It became a permanent zone in 2004 and is still the only off-leash dog beach in Los Angeles County.
