After forming an exploratory committee for a mayoral bid in February, Long Beach attorney, educator and active civic and community leader Douglas Otto officially filed papers Monday to run for mayor in the 2014 election.

The Long Beach native and current Long Beach City College Trustee is a former president of the Long Beach Bar Association, a founding Board member of the Aquarium of the Pacific, the co-founder and past president of Long Beach Heritage and a former president of the Arts Council of Long Beach. He has also chaired and served as a member of many civic groups such as the Long Beach Planning Commission, City of Long Beach’s Blue Ribbon Citizens Transportation Task Force and the City of Long Beach Ethics Task Force.

In 2004, Otto was appointed to chair the Long Beach Strategic Plan 2010, a master plan for the city.

“I have lived in Long Beach all my life; went to school here and raised my family here,” says a statement on the front page of Otto’s recently renovated campaign website. “Long ago I made a personal commitment to do everything I could to make this city a livable, thriving community for the families and businesses that call Long Beach home. I know this city and love this city. I believe I can make a difference.”

Otto’s website also includes quotes from prominent supporters including local business owners, Aquarium of the Pacific President Jerry Schubel and LBCC President Eloy Ortiz Oakley.

According to the City Clerk’s office, Otto is the fourth person to file for the position, but more may enter the race depending on whether or not Mayor Bob Foster decides to run as a write-in candidate. Elections will be held in April 2014.
