A driver accused of crashing into a truck while performing stunts at a West Long Beach intersection last week, causing the death of a woman, has been charged with manslaughter, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.

Saul Alfas, a 20-year-old Carson resident, made his first court appearance Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to one count of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, according to the DA’s Office.

Police say Alfas was performing donuts at the intersection of Willow Street and Caspian Avenue around 11 p.m. Friday when he struck a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado truck that was approaching the intersection.

The crash caused the driver of the Silverado to lose control of the vehicle and collide with a nearby tree.

A woman who was a front passenger in the truck was ejected from the vehicle during the crash and died at the scene, police said. She was identified as 21-year-old Jacqueline Zamarripa of Long Beach, according to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Following the crash, Alfas fled the scene, according to police, but he turned himself in the following day.

Alfas remains jailed in lieu of $50,000, inmate records show, and he faces additional court hearings later this month.
