Long Beach police will hold a DUI checkpoint in the West Patrol Division area from 6 p.m. Friday to 2 a.m. Saturday.

Police did not disclose the specific area, but the West Division includes the area west of the 710 Freeway and part of Central Long Beach.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests, police said. During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The purpose is to “promote safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired,” police said in a statement.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
