The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will conduct a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint this weekend in North Long Beach.

During the operation, which will last from 7:00PM Saturday to 3:00AM Sunday, officers will look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing, the LBPD said in a statement.

Specially-trained officers will also be available to evaluate those suspected of drug-impaired driving.

“Recent statistics reveal that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems,” the LBPD said in a statement. “A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent).  Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.”

DUI checkpoints are placed in locations that are frequent sites of DUI arrests and collisions caused by DUIS, police said.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses, police said.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
