The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will be on the lookout for intoxicated drivers this weekend at a checkpoint in East Long Beach.

The checkpoint will take place this Saturday, August 9, between 7:00PM and 3:00AM. Officers will look for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as proper licensing. Those caught driving impaired can expect jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000, police said.

Police said DUI checkpoints are placed in locations that are frequent sites of collisions and DUI arrests.

“Locations are chosen with safety considerations for the officers and the public,” LBPD stated in their release.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Police said those who see impaired drivers should call 9-1-1.
