A dumpster fire that spread to a two-story apartment building in Central Long Beach displaced five residents and a pet Sunday afternoon, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jack Crabtree said.

Firefighters responded at around 2:20 p.m. to the 1000 block of Lewis Avenue, near 11th Street, and extinguished the fire in minutes, Crabtree said. The fire came from a blazed dumpster that was outside the apartment building and had transferred to one unit.

“It was a small fire, but it was enough to cause some spread,” Crabtree said. The smoke and fire damage displaced the five residents and the pet, all of whom were in the affected unit, he said. Animal services and Red Cross responded to help the pet and residents, respectively, with the displacement.

Fire investigators responded to the scene and are evaluating the cause of the fire, he said.
