The District Weekly‘s Dave Wielenga reports today that 7th District Councilmember Tonia Reyes Uranga has decided to seek a third term in April’s election, and will mount a write-in campaign because of term limits. Reyes Uranga was first elected in 2002, and again in 2006. This announcement stems from her husband’s decision to drop his campaign to replace her in the seat, when Roberto Uranga decided instead to accept the position of Vice Chair of the Association of College Trustees, a national non-profit representing community colleges across the country. Reyes Uranga had not considered running for re-election until her husband ended his campaign.

Uranga told us two weeks ago that he would support any decision his wife makes.

“I wholeheartedly endorse and support whatever my wife chooses to do,” he said, in this article. “If she runs a write-in campaign, I am 102-percent behind her. She’s currently looking into that and I’m sure she’ll have more information soon.”

Current 9th District Councilmember Val Lerch is also mounting a write-in campaign to hold his seat. He too was elected in 2002 and again in 2006. Former Mayor Beverly O’Neill was re-elected during by write-in votes in 2002, after she had served two terms.

Joining Reyes Uranga in the race will be James Johnson, Jill Hill and Jack Smith.

More to come…
