Cal State Long Beach will open 16 classrooms in Downtown next year as part of the city’s larger plan to revitalize the area and focus on workforce development, officials said Wednesday.

The classes under the university’s College of Professional and International Education will be held in a six-block mixed-use district between Long Beach Boulevard and Pine Avenue from Third to Sixth Street, now referred to as “The Streets.”

The classes will include project management, cybersecurity, social work and other subjects that can benefit professional growth in the city’s westside and downtown business districts. The rooms, with up to 400 seats total, also will provide additional space for overflow on the main campus.

Officials said the 10-year, $1 million agreement with Cal State Long Beach, which was approved by the City Council on Tuesday, will set the stage for economic development training, education and community partnerships.

“Bringing Long Beach State to Downtown has been an initiative that President Conoley and I have been strongly advocating for,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a statement. “Having the university in our downtown is an amazing opportunity for students to be closer to employers, and for our business community to tap into an energetic, smart and driven future workforce.”

The funding came through proceeds from the city’s property sale of Broadway Block Site B. The university is responsible for additional costs for the program.

“As the downtown area is more fully developed, we know this is a location where we want to be,”  said Cal State Long Beach President Jane Close Conoley in a statement. “It is a place where students and faculty can better collaborate and learn from the region’s businesses, industry and non-profit leaders; where we can provide greater insights and influence on key partnerships like the Long Beach College Promise; and where we can create more opportunities for our students and the people of Long Beach.”
