The California State University (CSU) system has announced the appointment of Framroze Virjee as the new Executive Vice Chancellor and General Counsel to the CSU Board of Trustees. He replaces current Interim General Counsel Andy Jones, who will return to his position as university counsel.
Virjee formally replaces former General Counsel Christine Helwick, who announced her retirement in December of 2012 after serving the CSU for 18 years. She was one of many who were part of the former-Chancellor Charles Reed’s legacy who left their post after Reed himself announced his own retirement.
The Office of the General Counsel includes three practice units; Academic Affairs & Student Services, Business & Finance and Human Resources—with 35 attorneys and paralegals whom Virjee will oversee.
Following a national search Virjee, a partner in Los Angeles-based O’Melveny & Meyers’s Labor and Employment practice, was chosen for his vast experience in public education, collective bargaining, Education Code compliance, discrimination and labor litigation. Virjee has been practicing for 30 years since achieving his JD from UC Hastings.
Jones has tossed his name into the ring to contend for the position but was ultimately moved back to his previous position serving individual universities. He last represented Long Beach State (CSULB), overseeing the administration side of the controversial case involving a CSULB professor who allegedly funneled large amounts of scholarship monies into a private account.
