Following the abrupt and quiet retirement of Benjamin F. Quillian, the California State University (CSU) has announced its new Vice Chancellor and Chief Financial Officer by way of Steve Relyea.

Beginning his job May 1, Relyea will be transferring away from his current post as UC San Diego Chief Business Officer and president of the UC San Diego Foundation. His move to the CSU marks his first venture in education outside the University of California (UC) system, an institution he has been with since 1975.

“I am delighted that Steve is joining the CSU,” said CSU Chancellor Timothy White, also previously of the UC system before heading the CSU. “He is a champion for public higher education, and his campus-based experience is complemented by participation with many system-wide initiatives in the UC, such as chairing the task force to redesign the UC administrative framework.”

According to the CSU, Relyea will oversee the entire Business and Finance Division—and with public eyes looking after last year’s kerfuffle following an audit that discovered the mismanagement of thousands of dollars in travel expenditures.

Reylea’s appointment will be affirmed by the Board of Trustees at their next meeting scheduled for March 25.
