Daisy Fire

UPDATE | Long Beach fire officials speculate a fatal house fire in the city’s South Wrigley neighborhood Wednesday night may have been caused by the use of a space heater or the victim smoking while using an oxygen tank.

The cause of the fire will be listed as undetermined because fire officials could not figure out which factors caused the fire, according to Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) spokesman Jake Heflin.

The space heater was probably located in the living room where the victim was found dead, Heflin said. An oxygen tank was also found near the victim, but fire officials could not determine if the victim was smoking while using the tank, he added.

Heflin said there were no working smoke detectors in the residence.

The fire appeared to be accidental, with no signs of foul play.

1/14/16 at 11:02AM | An elderly woman and one of her dogs were killed in a fire at her Long Beach home Wednesday night, according to the Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD).

Fire units responded to the house fire on the 2300 block of Daisy Avenue at 9:19PM on Wednesday, January 13, LBFD officials said.

Engine 13 arrived on scene at 9:23PM and reported smoke and fire visible from the front of the single story, single family residence, according to authorities.

“Fire units initiated an aggressive fire attack and confined the majority of the fire to the front of the living room,” officials said.

The fire was out by 9:27PM.

Upon completion of a secondary search, firefighters found the elderly woman dead in the living room.

Two dogs were also found. Firefighters tried to provide additional oxygen to one of the dogs but their efforts were unsuccessful, according to officials. The other dog was uninjured and subsequently released to Long Beach Animal Control officers.

There were 29 firefighters assigned to the incident at the height of the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.

The coroner’s office has not yet identified the charred body but according to Fox11, which spoke to her family, she is 82-year-old Joan Pizzato.
