An elderly woman was struck and killed by a motorist on Saturday after she attempted to cross a Long Beach street outside of the crosswalk, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 14th Street at 12:23PM on Saturday, October 31, where they found the 20-year-old male driver attending to the victim, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officials.

A preliminary investigation found that the motorist—a Long Beach resident—was driving a 2005 Acura Legend northbound on Pacific Avenue when he struck the pedestrian who was attempting to cross westbound on Pacific Avenue, just north of 14th Street, outside the crosswalk, authorities said.

Paramedics transported the victim to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The unidentified woman is believed to be between 70 to 80 years old, according to coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter. The woman’s next of kin has not been located yet, he said on Monday.

The driver was interviewed and released, pending further investigation.

Northbound Pacific Avenue, between Anaheim and 16th streets, was closed for about two hours during the investigation, LBPD spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.
