The connector of the eastbound SR-22 and the northbound I-605 was closed for several hours Tuesday evening after a crane fell across the single-lane road. Though it reopened after the crane was cleared at 8:15PM, the connector closed again overnight for planned construction as part of the West County Connectors Project.
According to the Orange County Transportation Authority, which oversees the construction equipment being used in the West County Connectors Project, the crane fell onto the connector right before it crosses over the I-405 at around 4:24PM. There were no reported injuries and California Highway Patrol were able to assist motorists exit the connector safely. It took four hours for crews to clear the crane and the connector reopened to traffic at 8:15PM.
“The cause of the crane collapse was not immediately known and is pending further investigation,” OCTA said in an announcement Tuesday night.
The connector where the crane collapsed–along with the eastbound SR-22 ramp onto the I-405 south and several other connectors in that network–was then closed just a few hours later, beginning at 11PM, for previously planned overnight West County Connectors Project work.
