A family was displaced this morning after children playing with matches sparked a non-injury fire in an apartment building, officials said.

The fire, located at 1170 East Market Street, was reported at 9:48AM, said Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin. The first arriving units saw smoke and flames, prompting about 25 firefighters to eventually respond. They were able to knock the flames down at about 9:56AM.

As a result of the fire, two adults and four children were displaced.

An arson investigator deemed the fire accidental after learning that unattended children were playing with matches in bed that morning, Heflin said. The children left something smoldering in a first-floor apartment’s bedroom, which didn’t have working smoke alarms.
