A dog was rescued and a Long Beach firefighter suffered minor injuries when a fire broke out in a carport and spread to two homes Sunday, authorities said.

Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) personnel responded to the structure fire on the 6500 block of Brayton Avenue shortly before 5:00PM, said LBFD spokesman Brian Fisk.

When the call came in, a lone occupant at a nearby home said he heard a loud pop, looked behind the residence and saw the carport fully engulfed in flames.

Arriving units found heavy fire and smoke coming from two adjacent houses and a detached garage, where the fire had spread, and a second alarm assignment was dispatched for additional manpower to fight the blaze.

Each house and the detached garage sustained extensive damage.

“Once the fire had been extinguished, lengthy salvage and overhaul operations ensued,” Fisk said.

Both homes were occupied at the time of the fire, and all residents were able to escape without injury, but one firefighter was injured and was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Fire personnel also rescued a dog from the house next door.

The carport was destroyed, Fisk said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no further information is available. We will update this story as we learn more.
