Kevin Broadwater, the domestic partner of James Vaughn, Director of the California Log Cabin Republicans, has been appointed by the Governor to the State Independent Living Council.
Vaughn was appointed last year by Governor Schwarzenegger to the California State Bar Board of Governors Examining Committee. This marks the first time that a gay Republican couple has served in an administration.
Broadwater, 43, has served as senior vice president of the legal and compliance department of Pacific Investment Management Company since 2005. Prior to that, he served as counsel at Seward & Kissel and, from 1992 to 1994, was an attorney at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. This position does not require Senate confirmation and there is no salary.
The State Independent Living Council sets the policy and funding levels for the state’s network of Independent Living Centers (ILCs) and services and monitors the implementation of it. The SILC also coordinates with similar agencies and councils at the state and federal levels to increase communication and help assure that services to people with disabilities are delivered effectively.
“Kevin’s parents had served on a similar commission in his home state of New York, so public service runs in his family,” said James Vaughn. “He learned a lot from his parents and thought that at this point in his life it was time to start contributing back to the community. The Commission specifically chose him because of his business experience which will help bring an important viewpoint to their work. The best diversity we can offer as Gay Republicans is our fiscal conservatism and real world business experience.”
The couple resides in nearby Laguna Hills. Broadwater is the 14th member of Log Cabin Republicans to be appointed to a State Commission by Governor Schwarzenegger.
