A family of five was displaced Tuesday afternoon when their home on the 4500 block of Atlantic Avenue caught fire, officials said.

Long Beach Fire Department personnel received a call about the fire and dispatched at about 11:57 to find heavy smoke showing, which is indicative of an active fire, said LBFD spokesman Jake Heflin.

The fire was put out by 12:07PM, but there was significant damage to the rear bedroom and extensive smoke damage throughout the house.

Ventilation operations were conducted, resulting in a hole cut in the roof to allow for the release of heated gas, Heflin said.

There were no injuries, but the five occupants of the Bixby Knolls home, ranging in age from 15 to 61, were displaced at least for the night. Red Cross was called to assist the residents with temporary lodging.

“I don’t think they’ll be able to stay here tonight because of smoke damage,” Heflin said. “For how long of a time is unknown.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation. We will update this story as we learn more.
