A bedroom in a Long Beach apartment unit sustained extensive damage when a fire broke out on the 900 block of New York Street just before 10:00AM today, causing no injuries, Long Beach Fire Department (LBFD) officials said.
Authorities cannot confirm if anyone was inside the two-bedroom dwelling at the time of the fire, but said the fire did displace a family of four—two adults and two children—requiring support from the Red Cross. The organization’s website says it typically provides lodging, food and clothing for fire victims.
LBFD spokesman Jake Helfin said the fire, which was put out at 10:09AM, was caused by workers using a torch to re-roof the top of the two-story, multi-unit apartment complex.
Firefighters had to tear through one of the exterior walls of the bedroom to extinguish the fire, which was confined to one of the interior walls and ran up the stud within the wall, authorities said.
The fire prompted three fire engines, one fire truck, one paramedic vehicle, and one battalion vehicle, with 25 firefighters on scene at the height of the incident.
