6:30pm | Local residents shivered their way through a frigid winter storm over the weekend, with temperatures in the city falling to a record-breaking low on Sunday.

The Associated Press reports that the temperature in the city of Long Beach plunged yesterday to a record low of 35 degrees — more than 10 degrees colder than the average temperature for the same date.

According to Weather Underground, an online weather information resource, the previous record low for Feb. 27 was recorded in 1996, when the temperature dipped to 37 degrees. The city’s average low for this date is listed as 49 degrees.

Throughout the Los Angeles basin, temperatures hovered in the 30s, yielding frost advisories and the temporary overnight closure of the Grapevine section of Interstate 5.
